The integration course with literacy training is intended for adults who cannot yet read and write, or who have only limited literacy skills. Participants learn the Latin alphabet while developing their German language skills.
Reading, writing, speaking and listening are combined step by step. This gives participants greater confidence in everyday life and helps them find their way around Germany more independently.
Learn to read, write and speak German
The literacy course combines learning German with learning the Latin script. Participants are gradually introduced to letters, words and simple texts and learn to use the language in typical everyday situations.
The course also teaches learning strategies. Participants discover how to continue learning independently, support one another and make use of the skills they already have.

The course is structured so that participants can progress at their own pace. Language and literacy skills are developed together.
Learn to read and write
The course begins with the letters and sounds of the Latin script. Participants learn to read words, write independently and understand simple written information.
Use German in everyday life
Basic German language skills are developed alongside literacy. Topics include typical everyday situations such as shopping, housing, health, work, public authorities and social contact.
Find your way around Germany
The language course is followed by an orientation course. Participants learn about German culture, history, the legal system, the democratic system and important social values.
Language and literacy for greater confidence in everyday life
The literacy course helps participants combine reading, writing and learning German. Content is introduced step by step and adapted to their personal circumstances and individual pace of learning.
Participants learn how to:
- read letters, words and simple texts
- write short messages and personal details
- understand forms and important documents more easily
- hold conversations in everyday situations
- communicate simple information verbally and in writing
- develop their own learning strategies
This gives them greater confidence in everyday life, helps them understand written information and enables them to participate more independently in society.

The language and literacy course may comprise up to 1,200 teaching units. It is followed by a 100-teaching-unit orientation course.
When does the course take place?
The literacy course takes place from Monday to Thursday.
Mornings: 8.30 a.m. to 12.45 p.m.
Afternoons: 1.30 p.m. to 5.45 p.m.
